Sydney and NSW direct the mode as nation’s top tourist destination

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Sydney was Wotif’s number one city for the second year running, and NSW the most represented state with 7 destinations on the top 20 list. The major arts, sporting and cultural events and activities taking place in 2010 are expected to inject more than $500 million into the NSW economy.

The Master Events Calendar includes some fantastic events such as the Medibank International Sydney Tennis Tournament, Mardi Gras, and the FIFA Fan Fest. The calendar also includes some exciting new events such as Parramasala - a week long festival of Indian arts to be held in Parramatta. These events promise to cater to a wide range of interests, provide a great day out for budget conscious families and inject vital funds into our economy.

The calendar includes the State’s three annual anchor events:

  • Vivacity which is on now through to the end of January,

  • Vivid, Sydney’s festival of music, light and ideas that brings the city to life throughout June; and

  • Crave, Sydney's October festival that celebrates our fantastic food, wine and lifestyle.

Sydney is maintaining a festive vibe in January, with Vivacity already underway and Sydney Festival organizers preparing for Festival First Night this weekend. The Sydney Festival offers an impressive array of music, dance, entertainment and theatre featuring an exciting line up of international and local performers.

Regional tourism for the new decade is off to a great start, with Parkes in the Central West this weekend expecting more than 10,000 visitors for the annual Elvis Festival. In Tamworth, organisers are predicting about 50,000 visitors for the Country Music Festival, expected to inject about $40 million for the city and surrounds.
